Ximena Caló

Ximena Caló is a PhD Student in the Department of Social and Political Sciences and the AXA Research Lab on Gender Equality at Bocconi University. Additionally, she is a 2025-2026 APSA Public Scholar. Her job market paper explores how natural disasters reshape voters' evaluations of women in office, using the 2010 Chilean earthquake to show that female councilors in hard-hit municipalities lose electoral support in subsequent elections. In her research she employs quantitative methods and causal inference to study women's inclusion in politics, and when their presence translates into substantive change. In Spring 2026 she was a visiting researcher at SOFI, Stockholm University, and at the SNF Agora Academy at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to her PhD she was a Predoctoral Fellow at the AXA Research Lab on Gender Equality. She holds an MSc(Res) from the London School of Economics and a BA from Boston University.
